The cameras on today’s smartphones have evolved from just a feature to capture basic photos and videos to capable of mixing hardware and computer vision enabling radically new creative mobile photo and video applications. Betting high on these advanced optics, Google has launched three new photo apps.

As part of a new series the new apps are dubbed as “appsperiments” that are usable and useful mobile photography experiences built on experimental technology. Google says the "appsperimental" approach is inspired from “Motion Stills,” an app developed by company that converts short videos into cinemagraphs and time lapses using experimental stabilisation and rendering technologies.

The appsperiments which includes Storyboard, Selfissimo! and Scrubbies, relies on object recognition, person segmentation, stylisation algorithms, efficient image encoding and decoding technologies.

Available only on Android, Storyboard transforms your videos into single-page comic layouts. Simply shoot a video and load it in Storyboard. The app automatically selects interesting video frames, lays them out, and applies one of six visual styles. Users can either save the storyboard or pull down to refresh or produce a new one with approximately 1.6 trillion different possibilities.

Available on iOS and Android, Selfissimo! is an automated selfie photographer that clicks a stylish black and white photo each time you pose. Just tap the screen to start a photoshoot.

The app encourages you to pose and snaps a photo whenever you stop moving. After ending the session, users can view save individual images or the entire shoot.

Available on iOS, Scrubbies lets you easily manipulate the speed and direction of video playback to produce delightful video loops that highlight actions, capture funny faces, and replay moments. The app also lets you remix the video by scratching it like a DJ. Scrubbing with one finger plays the video. Scrubbing with two fingers captures the playback so you can save or share it.
