Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek collaborates with Google to ensure smooth running of Android Oreo (Go edition) on its line of processors and to deliver a seamless Android smartphone experience for devices with 512MB to 1GB of memory.

MediaTek’s MT6739, MT6737, and MT6580 SoCs, among others, now have support packages available to run Android Oreo (Go edition).

Early this week, Google announced Android Oreo (Go edition) -- an optimised its OS platform designed to improve the capabilities of entry level devices that have limited processing power and to give users more control over data usage.

“Entry-level devices are the gateway to the internet for many people, and we want to make sure everyone has a great experience when they use these devices. We’re excited that Android Oreo (Go edition) will significantly improve storage, performance, data management, and security,” said Sameer Samat, VP of Product Management, Android & Google Play.

Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphones powered by MediaTek will be available globally in the first quarter of 2018.

“With Android Oreo (Go edition), we are partnering with Google to tackle the performance challenges of lower memory phones, improving the user experience of entry level smartphones for consumers in key markets across India, the Middle East & Africa, Latin America and South East Asia,” added TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit.

Android Oreo (Go Edition) is a part of Google’s Next Billion Team to bring on board mobile users in emerging regions such as India, Southeast Asia and Africa with a more modern operating system.
