Microsoft today ended support for Windows Phone 8.1. The move comes three years after the company first introduced the update. Millions of devices are still running operating system and the end of support has killed the Windows Phone era.

According to media reports, approximately 80 percent of all Windows-powered phones are still running Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8, or Windows Phone 8.1. All of these handsets are now officially unsupported, and only 20 per cent of all Windows phones are running the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS.

Windows Phone 8.1 was one of the biggest update to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system which included Cortana digital assistant, a new notification centre, changes in the user interface and updates mobile OS.

Over 99 per cent of all the new smartphones now run Android or iOS. Microsoft's Windows phones were not doing as expected and the share of Windows fell from 1.1 percent to 0.3 percent in the last quarter of 2016.

Owing to the losses in the smartphone business segment, Microsoft laid off an additional 2,850 workers to the previously 1,850 jobs it said it would cut.

Microsoft recently released a new beta version of Windows 10 with changes in user interface (UI) for "Start" and "Action Center" features.

"Action Center" has been redesigned to provide much clearer information separation, hierarchy and also groups notifications together in a more coherent way from devices and apps.

The new build number "16215" packs elements of the new "Fluent Design System".The new build is open for developers and members of 'Windows Insider' programme for testing before market release.
