Chip maker Qualcomm has introduced Snapdragon 845 -- a third-generation artificial intelligence (AI) mobile platform designed to deliver three times more efficiency over prior AI-enabled system-on-chips.

Successor to Snapdragon 835, the new Snapdragon 845 platform will power most of the Android smartphones next year and offers improved security, high connectivity and immersive experiences.

The new chipset retains the same 10-nanometer (nm) LPP FinFET process technology as the previous version, however, the new camera and visual processing architectures will help Snapdragon 845 deliver up to 30 per cent power reduction for video capture, games and XR applications compared to the previous generation.

In addition to advancing the video capture experience, the new Adreno 630 visual processing subsystem architecture will provide new extended reality (XR) experiences that span virtual, augmented and mixed reality. Snapdragon 845 is the first mobile platform to enable room-scale 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) with simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) -- for features such as wall-collision detection.

Users will also witness a 30 per cent improvement in graphics performance and power efficiencies thanks to the new Adreno 630. The new Qualcomm Kryo 385 architecture, built on Arm Cortex technology, will offer up to 25 per cent performance uplift across gaming, application launch times, and performance intensive applications compared to the previous generation.

With these brand-new architectures, Snapdragon 845 will be able to captures 64x more high-dynamic range colour information for video capture and playback on ultra HD premium displays, compared to the previous generation. This massive upgradation will make Snapdragon 845 chip capture more hues of same colours along with increased level of brightness making it good at photography.

The Snapdragon 845 comes with a hardware isolated subsystem dubbed as secure processing unit (SPU), which will offer improved biometrics security as well as user or application data key management used to encrypt critical information.

The 845 chipset integrates Qualcomm’s second-generation Snapdragon X20 LTE modem which will allow for blazing fast connection speeds and Qualcomm says users can download a 3GB movie in less than three minutes. The modem supports wide range of frequency band configurations across licensed, unlicensed and shared radio spectrum including 5G.
