If you’re one of those who can’t go about doing anything without a selfie, the Gionee S6s is made keeping you in mind.

Selfie lovers, rejoice! For here is a phone that unashamedly claims that it’s been made for the selfie-obsessed folks of the world. The device in question here is the Gionee S6s and – drumroll – it comes with a “selfie flash”. Not only that, the front camera also packs a slew of face beautification options that can make even the wrinkliest of faces appear spotless in the picture. But is that all what you need from a smartphone at that price?

With the Gionee S6s, the company is targeting buyers in the age group of 18-25. And that’s understood since the youth of today can’t go about their daily routine without posting a selfie or two on social media. However, the first pre-requisite to woo the young buyers is how appealing the device looks by itself. Suffice it to say, Gionee has had that bit covered quite effectively with the S6s. The unibody metal design and sleek dimensions give the phone an edgy and premium feel, making it aesthetically quite pleasing.

The specs aren’t shoddy either. Let’s start with its cameras first – the primary unit is 13MP with autofocus while the front camera is 8MP. Computing power comes courtesy of a 1.3GHz octa-core processor, clubbed with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. The phone runs Gionee’s Amigo 3.2 OS that’s loosely based on the Android Marshmallow. While the specs may not sound path breaking for a device of this price bracket, the S6s performs flawlessly regardless of the task you throw at it. The vast number of pre-loaded apps, however, is a bit of an irritant.

The S6s features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1920×1080) screen that delivers crisp and vibrant colours, albeit it feels a little too bright on the eye even with brightness level set to the minimum. Images produced from both front and rear cameras are decent, but not class leading. Given how Gionee markets the S6s as a selfie specialist, we were left a little underwhelmed by its camera performance.

Overall, the Gionee S6s is a pretty good looking device that has the performance to match its premium looks. The only real grouse is that it’s priced steeply for the kind of performance it delivers. And with their target buyers being the youth that’ll a bit of a concern, no matter how badly they want the cool selfie flash thingy of the S6s.
