India being second largest smartphone market globally and now with cheap mobile data rates, the country has become a battleground for domestic and international content streaming platforms.

US-based media streaming service Netflix is testing a Rs 65 weekly subscription plan for mobile users in India. The Rs 65 plan, if rolled out, will be the company’s lowest subscription plan in the country. Amazon and Hotstar offer monthly subscription plans at Rs 199.

The Rs 65 mobile only plan will let users’ stream content only on one smartphone screen at a time and does not support HD or 4K resolution. Other Netlix plans include Rs 125 basic plan, Rs 165 standard plan for two screens allowed and Rs 200 ultra plan for four screens in 4k.

Considering the fact that India has cheapest mobile data rates globally, the Rs 65 might sound affordable, however, Netflix is still expensive over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform in India.

In February, Netflix collaborated with Hathway allowing consumers to stream Netflix content via the Hathway set-top box. Priced at Rs 2,999, the Hathway set-top box comes with dedicated Netflix button on the remote. Further, all the existing and new Hathway users, who will subscribe to Netflix and pay their subscription with their Hathway bill, will receive this box for free.

Netflix recently launched Smart Downloads in its app that automatically deletes a downloaded video you have watched and downloads the next one.
