Xiaomi Redmi 5 to launch on February 14

China’s Xiaomi is all set to launch Redmi 5 smartphone in India on February 14. The company has sent out media invites that reads: ‘You are invited for Xiaomi’s first product in 2018.’ There is also a big '5' logo on the invite making it certain that the smartphone will be Redmi 5.

The smartphone is expected to come in three variants – 2GB RAM/16GB storage, 3GB RAM/32GB storage and 4GB RAM/32GB storage at CNY 799 (approx. ₹ 8,100), CNY 899 (approx. ₹ 9,100) and CNY 1,099 (approx. ₹ 11,200), respectively. In December of 2017, Xiaomi launched Redmi 5 in black, gold, light blue and rose gold colours.

Xiaomi might also launch Redmi 5 Plus, however there is no official announcement as yet. In China, while the Redmi 5 sports a 5.7-inch HD+ (720x1440 pixels) display, Redmi 5 Plus features a 5.99-inch full-HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) – both come with 18:9 aspect ratio.

Both smartphones sport 12MP rear sensor with f/2.2 aperture and PDAF. On the front is a 5MP camera with soft-light selfie flash. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack and Micro-USB.

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, China’s Xiaomi emerged as the top smartphone brand in India in the fourth quarter of 2017 with 25 per cent market share, followed by Samsung, which captured 23 per cent market share.
