Xiaomi has revealed the new Redmi S2 smartphone in China, which serves as the first device from the company's brand new Redmi S series.

To be positioned below the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the main highlight of the new S2 is its 16MP front-facing camera with 2-micron pixels, LED flash and AI-based beautification features. The phone also supports the face unlock security feature.

At the phone’s back are two cameras - a 12MP main sensor that’s complemented by a secondary 5MP sensor for better bokeh effect. This rear camera setup appears to be similar to that of the Note 5 Pro, as it also features EIS.

Up front, the Redmi S2 rocks a 5.99-inch tall display of HD+ resolution. The phone is powered by the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC which is coupled with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM depending on the variant chosen. On the software front, the phone runs MIUI 9 based on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 comes with all essential sensors like accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, infrared, and proximity sensor. The phone is powered by a 3080mAh battery. Colour options for the Chinese market will include Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver, and Rose Gold.

The Redmi S2 will go on sale in China very soon. Global availability details are not yet known.
